VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Mont Fleuri National Theatre came alive on Saturday afternoon as approximately 65 talented young performers, aged 3 to 17, took the stage for the inaugural talent show hosted by the School for the Exceptional Child. Joined by their proud teachers and the school’s staff, the children delivered a heart-warming and unforgettable two-hour celebration of creativity, courage, and exceptional ability. The event was graced by the presence of President Patrick Herminie and First Lady Veronique Herminie.
The performers showcased around 26 songs, poems, and dance items over the course of the two-part event, with the first part focusing on special performances, including a special feature of a father and son playing the guitar accompanied by popular local singer Elijah. Two other renowned artists, Joseph Sinon and Philip Toussaint, also made special appearances. Two fashion shows, ‘Tie and Dye’ and a ‘Disney Character’ showcase, allowed staff and children to dress up as their favourite fictional characters. The crowd especially enjoyed the body-building section, with the children exhibiting their muscles in a wholesome and humorous fashion.
In a brief address, President Herminie acknowledged and admired the confidence of the children to perform on stage. He reaffirmed his commitment, and that of the government, to fully support the differently abled and vulnerable children so they may also contribute to the country’s development. He noted that the talent show was not just a demonstration of talent but rather showed the potential of every Seychellois child. Head teacher Marie-May Leon said the talent show was inspired by the desire to show parents that their children have progressed in a different way, and that the event is expected to be biennial.
