PUC Reintroduces Nationwide Water Restrictions as Dry Weather Persists

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has re-introduced night-time water restrictions on Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue, as the dry weather has persisted and intensified, and water levels at the river intakes have continued to decline. The restrictions, in force from 9pm to 5am, were introduced in the north and south of Mahé as well as on Praslin and La Digue.

Over the past two weeks, rainfall experienced across the islands had allowed the PUC to maintain normal water supply operations without imposing restrictions. However, the continued lack of rainfall has forced the corporation to take the precautionary step to safeguard supplies. PUC’s chief operations officer, Ravin Sunassee, was on site at the Anse à la Mouche desalination plant on Thursday afternoon to oversee operations and explain the measures to the public.

Officials from PUC said the desalination plants, including the one at Anse à la Mouche, are working to their full capacity to make up for the shortfall in rainwater harvesting. The corporation has urged customers to use water sparingly, store what they can during off-peak hours, and report any leaks or burst pipes. PUC said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and will lift the restrictions as soon as rainfall returns to sustainable levels and reservoir intakes recover.
