VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) on Wednesday hosted a public open day and energy fair to mark World Energy Day, an annual observance that highlights the central role of energy in modern life. The event was addressed by the Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, Flavien Joubert, who said the day is not just a date on the calendar but serves as a powerful reminder of the essential role that energy plays in every aspect of life.
‘It is also a reminder of the urgent need to use energy wisely, sustainably, and equitably, for our planet and for future generations,’ Minister Joubert said, adding that the event was an opportunity for reflection, learning and engagement. He commended PUC for creating a space where technical knowledge meets public awareness, and where citizens, especially young people, can better understand how energy is produced, managed and conserved, through exhibitions, interactive displays, school competitions and youth programmes.
Brigitte Payet, communications manager at PUC, said the event was aimed at educating students on the importance of electricity itself and the challenges the corporation encounters behind the scenes, while also encouraging young people to consider a career in the energy sector. Exhibits showcased transformers, solar panels and other equipment, with visitors able to see demonstrations of pole climbing and energy-efficient appliances.
Among the companies represented was Advance Technical Services, whose advisor, Steven Antoine, explained how solar panels work and showcased air-conditioning systems powered by battery and solar energy that continue to operate even during power cuts. Apart from the energy fair, PUC hosted a work placement programme and educational visits for students from tertiary education institutions.
