PUC Boosts Water Production on Praslin with Upgraded Desalination Plant

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has announced that its efforts to increase water production on Praslin are showing positive results, following the recent upgrade of its desalination plant on Eve Island. During a press conference held on Monday afternoon at Electricity House, Roche Caïman, the corporation’s chief operations officer, Ravin Sunassee, said the enhanced facility has been fully operational since Thursday, October 16, and has already made a big difference in water availability for residents.

‘Over the weekend we have monitored the situation and observed a great improvement in production and the distribution of water,’ Mr Sunassee said. The improved plant comes as Praslin faces one of its most prolonged dry spells in recent history. Mr Sunassee explained that before the plant was upgraded, PUC was forced to shut off water supply twice a day — from 9am to 5pm, and again from 9pm to 5am — to manage limited water resources.

‘With the newly installed plant, we are shutting off the water supply only at night, from 9pm to 5am, and we are not shutting off the supply at all during the day on Praslin, which means that consumers are using water throughout the day,’ he said.

Mr Sunassee thanked residents for their patience during the recent restrictions and assured them that PUC will continue to monitor supply closely and carry out any further adjustments needed to keep the service stable as the dry weather continues.
