Seychelles Maritime Academy Unveils Upgraded GMDSS Simulator Facility

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Maritime Academy (SMA) officially unveiled its new upgraded Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) simulator facility during a commissioning ceremony held on Wednesday afternoon at the institution.

The upgraded facility will allow cadets and seafarers to train on modern communication and safety equipment, in line with international maritime standards set by the International Maritime Organisation. Officials said the new system is expected to strengthen the country’s capacity to produce well-trained officers for the global shipping industry.

The ceremony was attended by senior staff of the academy, maritime industry stakeholders and officials from partner institutions, who toured the new facility and were briefed on its operational capabilities. The upgrade replaces equipment that had become outdated after many years of service.

SMA management said the investment reflects the institution’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as a leading maritime training centre in the Indian Ocean region. The academy will continue to work with international partners to ensure that its programmes remain relevant to the evolving needs of the maritime sector.
