VICTORIA, Seychelles — A fire that broke out at the Providence landfill has been burning since Saturday and is expected to be fully contained in the coming days, the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency has said.
Public relations officer Terrence ArnePhil confirmed that the situation is being managed by the agency and its partners, who expect to bring the blaze under full control. He noted that the heavy smoke conditions were slowing progress but teams on the ground were working to contain the fire. The fire, which started as a large blaze in the area where old scrap metal is dumped, then spread to another section of the landfill near the municipal salt pans.
‘The firefighters on site have brought the fire under control. It is not spreading everywhere, but only in the area where the flames are still burning. We have the necessary resources on site and efforts to combat the fire are continuing,’ Mr ArnePhil said. He noted that some infrastructure, including boats in the area surrounding the fire, had been affected, but the full extent of the damage would only be known once the fire has been fully contained.
He confirmed that no person was injured in the fire. The agency has appealed to the public to avoid the area while firefighting operations continue, and to report any signs of fresh smoke or flare-ups to the Fire and Rescue Services.
