Seychellois Students in Malaysia Form Sunway Seychelles Society

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychellois students studying in Malaysia have come together to create the ‘Sunway Seychelles Society’, a community group designed to give them a sense of home while abroad and a platform to share their identity with fellow students. The society was formed in April this year and was officially launched in May with a ‘Discover our Culture’ event, featuring an exhibition showcasing Seychelles at Sunway University.

Speaking about the initiative, member Sheena Labonte said the idea was to bring Seychellois students together to cope with being far from home and family. “Being far from home is not always easy, and this society is our way of keeping the island vibes alive, sharing our cultures with others and supporting each other as a community,” she said. The group currently has 16 members, and the aim is to grow that number over the coming academic year.

Ms Labonte stressed that the initiative is about more than just student entertainment. She said the society intends to host popular annual activities in Seychelles, such as the Creole Festival in October, in partnership with the wider community. “This is a meaningful step for all of us. We are proud to be here, proud to share our culture and excited for what is to come,” she concluded.
