VICTORIA, Seychelles — Leisure vessels less than seven metres long, including jet skis, will be prohibited from travelling from Mahé to Praslin and La Digue during the weekend of August 15 to August 17, 2025, which coincides with the Feast of the Assumption of St Mary. The restriction, announced by chief executive of the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority, Captain Daniel Adam, during a press conference at the National Safety Coordination Centre, Coast Guard Base, Bois de Rose, aims to ensure maritime safety during the festivities.
“The measure will, however, not apply to fishing boats falling in that category.” Captain Adam stated that commercial and fishing vessels are exempted from the rule, while leisure boats above seven metres in length are allowed to do the crossing between sunrise and sunset, in cooperation with the Seychelles Ports Authority and other law enforcement agencies. The SMSA held a meeting with representatives of the SPA and other agencies to discuss safety issues ahead of the feast.
Speaking at the press conference, Captain Edwin Constance and other officials highlighted the importance of the safety measures and the cooperation of boat owners, operators and the travelling public. The measures are part of broader efforts to ensure that the annual pilgrimage and celebrations around the Feast of the Assumption of St Mary take place in a safe and orderly manner, with the SMSA, the police and other agencies working together to manage the flow of vessels between the islands.
