Seychelles Fishermen and Boat Operators Prepare for Busy Feast of Assumption Weekend

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Local fishermen and boat operators are preparing for one of the busiest weekends of the year as thousands of pilgrims and visitors are expected to travel between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of St Mary from August 15 to 17, 2025. The annual religious pilgrimage draws large crowds to the islands, with ferries, private boats and charter services operating at full capacity.

Authorities have announced a range of safety measures, including restrictions on leisure vessels under seven metres from crossing between the islands during the weekend. The Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority, the Ports Authority and the police are coordinating efforts to manage the flow of vessels and ensure the safety of passengers and crew. Lifeguards, the coast guard and the disaster risk management division are also on standby.

Speaking ahead of the weekend, officials urged travellers to plan their journeys in advance, follow the instructions of the authorities, and respect the maritime rules in place. The Feast of the Assumption of St Mary is one of the most important religious events in the Catholic calendar in Seychelles, and the increased maritime traffic requires careful coordination to ensure that all those wishing to attend can do so safely.
