Schools Shine at National Wheelbarrow Garden Competition 2025

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Thirty schools from across Seychelles participated in the National Wheelbarrow Garden Competition 2025, an event that celebrated creativity, sustainability, and the role of young people in promoting food security. The competition, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture, brought together primary and secondary schools.

In the primary category, Bel Eau school took second place, while Baie Ste Anne Praslin school secured third place. Three schools received Special Effort Awards in recognition of their creativity and commitment. The secondary category showcased equally impressive gardens, with students explaining the thought and effort behind their projects.

‘Our school created a wheelbarrow garden to show how we can grow food even in small spaces,’ said Lana Lavigne from Beau Vallon secondary. Abdel Mousbe from Beau Vallon primary added: ‘Our school made a difference by showing how gardening can bring the community together.’ The schools paraded during the opening of the Agriculture and Horticulture Show in June, where the competition was first highlighted.
