VICTORIA, Seychelles — Charles Lesperance, popularly known as Ton Charles, is not just a well-known musician and one of the oldest violinists in Seychelles, but also an individual who has contributed greatly to the conservation and protection of the environment on Praslin. He was recently among those recognised for his enormous contribution to the field of conservation and protection of our environment.
The recognition was presented by the Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment. Although he was not present at the ceremony held at the Savoy Seychelles Resort & Spa at Beau Vallon, Ton Charles spoke to local media about his work in the environment. ‘I also got the chance to help put out fires when there were fire incidents in the forest,’ he said.
Asked what made him pursue conservation and environmental protection, he said: ‘It is the love I developed for nature that has helped me in this field. My work has helped me understand the importance of our environment in the development of our country, and also enriched my knowledge of the endemic species we have in Seychelles. This work has also helped me understand the importance of keeping our environment natural and in good condition for our future generations.’ He is also known for planting thousands of coco de mer palms.
