VICTORIA, Seychelles — A special commemorative ceremony was held on Saturday under the theme ‘A Decade of Impact’ to mark Seychelles’ decade of leadership and innovation in developing the blue economy. The event, which started at 9am on Saturday and continued until 2am on Sunday, featured various activities at the Beau Vallon Regatta site, with the main highlight being a bazaar.
The symbolic start was the traditional conch blowing to signal the opening of the bazaar, done by a Bel Ombre fisherman, Marc Grandcourt. A special music performance titled ‘Heart of the Ocean’, composed by Rosemary Bargain and Clifford Alexis, was brought to life on stage by Maria Mein. During the official launch, principal minister and Minister for Fisheries and the Blue Economy Jean-François Ferrari said that during the decade, Seychelles has emerged as a global pioneer in the blue economy.
‘We set aside nearly a third of our Exclusive Economic Zone for marine protection, safeguarding biodiversity while promoting sustainable fisheries and tourism. We fostered strong regional and international partnerships, demonstrating that cooperation drives real progress for small island states,’ Mr Ferrari said. The bazaar, awards and big ideas reflect Seychelles’ commitment to a sustainable ocean economy that supports livelihoods, food security and climate resilience.
