Minister Valentin Defends Beer Sales at Student Event: “It Was Controlled”

Only in Seychelles could a national school athletics championship stir up a debate over beer. But here we are.

Education Minister Dr. Justin Valentin is standing firm amid public criticism following the sale of alcohol near Stad Linite during the 45th edition of the National Interschool Athletics Championships. While some parents and critics questioned whether beer and school sports should ever mix, the Minister has dismissed the concerns, arguing that everything was done “by the book.”

“Yes, there was a stall that sold alcohol,” Dr. Valentin admitted. “But it was properly controlled and part of a larger effort to create a family-friendly environment.” That’s right—family-friendly, complete with cold beers under the Seychellois sun.

The stall, which operated just outside the main stadium area, sparked controversy on social media, with some arguing that the presence of alcohol at a children’s sporting event sends the wrong message. Others noted that it was far from uncommon at large public gatherings and accused critics of overreacting.

Minister Valentin, however, remains unshaken. “Let’s not be hypocrites,” he said. “We are not promoting alcohol to children. The stall was outside the venue, under supervision, and operated within the bounds of the law.”

He further explained that creating a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere was a deliberate strategy to encourage more families to attend and support the students—a sort of “carnival meets competition” vibe.

Still, the optics of it all haven’t sat well with everyone. Several school staff and parents, while not officially quoted, have expressed concern that the presence of alcohol—even with controls—distracts from the spirit of healthy competition and youth development the event is meant to celebrate.

The Ministry insists that all vendors were licensed, monitored, and kept separate from students. But as the debate continues, it raises a broader question: Should alcohol have any place near a school event, no matter how well managed?

In true Seychelles fashion, this isn’t just about beer. It’s about where we draw the line between celebration and responsibility—especially when our youth are centre stage.

As Dr. Valentin quipped, “If we’re going to talk about values, let’s also talk about balance.” The real question now is whether the public agrees.
