The Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority (SMSA) has issued a marine safety alert after a vessel sank following a fire incident at sea on Thursday, 26 June 2025. The wreck is located at Latitude 04°37.722′ S, Longitude 055°28.777′ E, and authorities have confirmed that it remains partially submerged.
A 500-metre safety exclusion zone has now been established around the site. A lit buoy has been deployed to mark the hazard, and the Seychelles Coast Guard is actively monitoring the area.
In a press release, the SMSA warned mariners of the potential danger:
“The wreck is not fully submerged and poses a direct threat to navigation. All vessels are advised to exercise extreme caution and maintain a safe distance.”
The authority also called on all vessels transiting through the area to remain vigilant.
“We urge all seafarers to keep a sharp lookout and give the wreck a wide berth. The 500-metre exclusion zone is being enforced for safety reasons,” said an SMSA spokesperson.
While details of the vessel and the nature of the fire have not been fully disclosed, the SMSA assured the public that maritime operations are being carefully managed.
“The Seychelles Coast Guard is maintaining a presence in the area to prevent any secondary incidents,” the statement continued.
The SMSA said further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. In the meantime, mariners are advised to consult the latest navigational notices and adhere strictly to the guidelines issued.
