MACCE Gala Marks 33rd Anniversary and Raises Funds for New Hospital

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment (MACCE) celebrated its 33rd anniversary on Friday evening with a special fundraising gala held at the Savoy Resort and Spa in Beau Vallon. Organised by the ministry’s Environment Social Committee, the event was also part of activities to commemorate World Environment Day, observed each year on June 5. This year, the gala took on extra meaning as it aimed to raise funds in support of the construction of the new Seychelles Hospital, one of the key national initiatives for 2025.

The elegant evening featured entertainment, fine dining and the launch of a charity auction, and brought together partners, supporters and individuals from various sectors to support a good cause. Four environmental pioneers — Charles Morel, Nelson Renaud, Charles Lesperance and Florine Durup — were honoured for their long-standing efforts to protect and promote the environment. In addition, two local non-governmental organisations, the Terrestrial Restoration Action Society Seychelles (TRASS) and Nature Seychelles, were presented with awards for their ongoing conservation work.

Speaking at the event, Minister Flavien Joubert noted the dual purpose of the evening — celebrating MACCE’s anniversary and contributing to a national cause. Lydia Asba, chairperson of the Environment Social Committee, shared details about the charity auction, which included five pieces of artwork and three uniquely-shaped coco de mer nuts. Bids for these items can be submitted via the ministry’s official email. Mrs Asba stressed that everyone uses a health facility or hospital at some point, and it is therefore important for the public to contribute to the new hospital project that will benefit all.
