VICTORIA, Seychelles — Following the official inauguration of the temporary market at the former Seychelles Trading Company (STC) supermarket in Victoria, where fruit, vegetable and souvenir vendors now operate during the renovation of the Selwyn Selwyn Clarke Market, the government has also announced that the fish market will be relocated to a new site at English River from June 30. The fish market will remain at the Selwyn Selwyn Clarke site until that date.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, principal secretary Keven Nancy explained that the government is building similar markets in other districts, which will allow more farmers to connect directly with customers. He noted that the renovation of the Selwyn Selwyn Clarke Market was undertaken last year but several challenges emerged due to the physical condition of the building, including outdated drainage systems and sanitary facilities that did not meet health regulations. The deteriorating infrastructure posed a serious public health risk, prompting the government to act decisively.
Market manager Vincent Germain emphasised that maintaining cleanliness and hygiene will be a top priority and urged all vendors to uphold high standards. He also noted that a few individuals have been setting up tents to sell vegetables and clothes nearby, but explained that these vendors do not fall under the market’s jurisdiction, and the authorities are working to determine the next steps. Once the renovations are completed, the market space will be re-evaluated, and the government is well aware of the situation regarding unauthorised vendors in the area.
