VICTORIA, Seychelles — In a heartfelt ceremony held on Saturday afternoon, the Nurses Association of the Republic of Seychelles (Nars) gathered at the Espace building to honour retired nurses for their unwavering devotion and lifelong dedication to the nursing profession. The event, also held in celebration of International Nurses Day, was attended by former healthcare professionals, community leaders, and serving members of Nars.
In her opening remarks, the president of Nars, Rhonda Burka, paid tribute to the former nurses, recognising their contribution to the population. “It is them who have directed the path for the new generations,” she said, adding that the celebration was also a moment to reflect on the impact of their work in the health system and in their community. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, stories, and shared memories spanning decades of service.
Among those present was Anne Desir, who worked in the nursing field for 51 years, and Jeannedarc Suzette, whose 46-year career took her through clinical work, administration, and 15 years of training nurses at the National Institute of Health and Social Sciences. Both women said the recognition was deeply appreciated. Mrs Suzette’s message to future nurses was to persevere. “Nursing is something that you do with your heart, there are challenges but persevere also.” Saturday’s gathering also featured the introduction of eight newly elected Nars members, as well as musical performances and games.
