VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Wavel Ramkalawan has paid tribute to nurses in Seychelles on the occasion of International Nurses Day, recognising their dedication and calling for greater investment in the profession. In a message issued on Monday, the president said nurses are the backbone of the country’s healthcare system.
“As we come together on May 12 every year to reflect on the significance of International Nurses Day, this year, I want to express my profound appreciation for the dedication and compassion that the hundreds of male and female — Seychellois and foreign, working and retired — nurses in Seychelles bring to the nursing profession,” Ramkalawan said. He acknowledged the expertise and resilience required of nurses in often-demanding environments, noting that they place patients’ needs at the forefront and consistently deliver high-quality care.
The president called on the National Institute of Health and Social Studies (NIHSS) and the University of Seychelles (UniSey) to work together in developing innovative training programmes to equip the next generation of nurses. He also noted the imminent construction of the new Seychelles Hospital, describing it as an exciting prospect for the nursing workforce and an opportunity to advance their professional journeys.
