National Assembly Launches Teacher’s Parliamentary Learning Space Programme

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Teachers from state and private secondary institutions, including a representative of the hearing impaired, are participating in a three-day training session to enhance their knowledge in civic education, especially with regard to the role, work, and function of the National Assembly of Seychelles in a democracy. They are the first cohort of the Teacher’s Parliamentary Learning Space (TPLS), a programme initiated by the National Assembly and the Commonwealth, which allows teachers to receive resource materials including training to enhance citizenship education in classrooms.

The training, which was formalised in a memorandum of understanding between the National Assembly and the Ministry of Education in October 2024, was launched by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Tania Isaac, in a short ceremony held yesterday at the assembly’s secretariat, Île du Port. Mrs Isaac commended both the students and teachers for their interest and consistent presence at the National Assembly each week to attend the deliberations.

She said that teachers who play a vital role in shaping the youth’s future should be equipped with the right tools and knowledge to guide them on important issues such as democracy, especially in this era of misinformation and disinformation. ‘By providing students with correct insights, you help them develop sound judgement about how democracy functions in our country. This is particularly important when it comes to understanding the role of the National Assembly in a democracy,’ said Mrs Isaac. The TPLS also aims to bridge the existing gap in civic education in Seychelles, especially on parliamentary functions in relation to democracy, good governance and accountability.
