VICTORIA, Seychelles — The 2025 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has placed Seychelles in a challenging position, reflecting global concerns about economic pressure on the media and a fragile information environment. The index reveals that economic pressure, more than any other factor, is the chief threat weakening press freedom around the world, with smaller and developing media markets particularly exposed.
Established in 1993, World Press Freedom Day on May 3 acts as an occasion to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom around the world, and to support and defend media workers. Joining the global observance, the Seychelles media community has noted a ‘significant dilemma’ at the centre of the new media landscape, especially in small island countries.
Local stakeholders underlined the need to support ethical reporting, independent journalism and the safety of media workers. The statement called attention to the rapid rise of digital platforms and the risk that quality and rigorous reporting are being displaced by unverified content, urging both policy support and public investment in professional journalism in Seychelles.
