VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Wavel Ramkalawan will travel to the Vatican to attend the funeral of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Office of the President announced yesterday. The President will be accompanied by the First Lady, Linda Ramkalawan, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sylvestre Radegonde.
The trip follows the President’s participation in the 5th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) in Antananarivo, Madagascar. According to a communiqué from the Presidency, the President and the Seychellois people stand in solidarity with the world in honouring the memory of the Sovereign Pontiff, and express their profound sadness at the loss for the Catholic Church and humanity.
The communiqué praised Pope Francis’s spiritual leadership, his commitment to world peace, social justice and environmental protection, which it said had deeply inspired the international community, including Seychelles. The date of the funeral and the full Seychellois delegation are expected to be confirmed by the Holy See in the coming days.
