VICTORIA, Seychelles — Madam Theresia Flore celebrated her 103rd birthday, in the presence of her family members, and other close ones near her residence at Beau Vallon. As is tradition, Madam Flore was presented with various gifts by the government, and local authority. It was the director general for Community Affairs in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Denise Clarisse who presented Madam Flore with a card, and a special message from President Wavel Ramkalawan which included a variety of products.
Elected representative of the Beau Vallon district, John Hoareau presented Madam Flore with a cake for her birthday, while the district administrator Mirenda Cardovilis presented her with a bouquet of flowers. Mr Hoareau said he is always happy to visit Madam Flore, and that it is something he really appreciates. ‘Madam Flore is not in a home, she is with her family. It is there that you find love, that personal touch, that joy of life, that good care, and that community within a family. I expect that our Seychellois community takes this into account, and understands that the best place for an elderly person, an elderly parent, is with their family,’ Mr Hoareau said.
For his part, principal secretary for the Family Department in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family, Mike Morel also highlighted the importance and role of the family in the lives of elderly people. ‘A hundred-three years is not just an age, it is a great accomplishment. Surely, Madam Flore has contributed in her own way, as far as she could, to raise her children, and to work and contribute to the community,’ Mr Morel said. Madam Flore was born on April 13, 1922. She has a son Davidson Flore with whom she lives, as well as a granddaughter Samantha Moses. Her son shared that he is very happy that his mother was able to celebrate another birthday among them, and that he would be happy if she worked on the island for several more years to celebrate many more.
