Autism Seychelles Hosts Annual Autism Fun Run

VICTORIA, Seychelles — A number of people took part in the annual autism fun run organised by Autism Seychelles on Saturday afternoon. The activity, held at the Stad Popiler, Victoria, aims to raise awareness about the autism spectrum disorder, while encouraging support, acceptance and understanding for individuals on the spectrum, and their families. Chairperson of Autism Seychelles, Stephanie Desnousse explained that the event is a way to promote inclusivity, resilience and a sense of community.

‘Every step we take together today, helps us pave the way for a more compassionate, accepting and supportive world,’ she stated. ‘Autism is not a one-size fits all experience. It comes in many forms with its own unique challenges, and incredible strengths,’ Mrs Desnousse added. As well as honouring the individuals on the spectrum, the fun run honours the caregivers, parents, educators and advocates. ‘This event is a reminder that we are stronger, when we come together as a community. With love, action and purpose, we can create real change.’ The newly-elected board members who took their posts in February also introduced themselves. They include secretary Sylvie Faure, vice chair Veronica Uzice, and members Herve Pool, Juliette Ernesta and Lathifa Marie.

As is customary, the fun run kicked off with various activities, including face painting, bouncing castles, and the sale of association merchandise. Natasha Joubert, who has a son on the spectrum, has been participating in the fun run since the beginning along with other family members. ‘These activities help to raise awareness, and it is also an opportunity for the parents to meet with one another, and share their experiences,’ Ms Joubert noted. In future, the association hopes to establish a school to cater to the many children who are diagnosed with autism. They will however have to acquire a parcel. Speaking to local media, Mrs Desnousse explained that the new board’s vision is focusing on the merger between the Autism centre, located at North East Point, under the education ministry’s wing. ‘We are working on ways to make our centre a more formal one in terms of education, so that we can have a centre where we can start doing some work with the children.’
