Education Ministry Organises Student Musical Talent Show in Capital

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Ministry of Education in collaboration with secondary schools on Saturday organised an activity titled ‘Talan bann zanfan dan kapital’ (Talent of the youth in the capital). The event included musical performances by four different secondary schools in town in the morning and at the Pointe Larue airport in the afternoon. The students represented Plaisance and Belonie secondary schools and came with a selection of songs to entertain passers-by.

Among the audience was the Minister for Education, Dr Justin Valentin, as well as parents and friends of the young singers who came to give their support. From Belonie secondary school, six students performed — Nesta on drums, Aron on bass, Auriel on guitar and Nitish on keyboard. The vocalists were Deara and Marielle. Their repertoire included new local songs by Seychellois artists such as Taniah, as well as international songs. Christy Esparon, a teacher at Belonie secondary school, explained that this activity is a programme by the Ministry of Education that brings school bands closer to the community.

‘It is also an opportunity for students to demonstrate their talents to the public,’ Ms Esparon said. Terissa Vital, one of the spectators, said she was not aware that schools had their own bands. ‘I found it very interesting and perhaps more enjoyable if they did it more often because this way we have a small tourist tour which is good for our country,’ she said. A parent who did not want to be named said he came to discover the talent of his son and his friends. ‘I also came to support them, and I can see that these young people have talent,’ he said. The activity brought a new atmosphere to the capital and demonstrated how such programmes help young people avoid negative influences and pursue activities they enjoy.
