VICTORIA, Seychelles — Alain Alcindor is the new president of the Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association, replacing Antonio Gopal who had occupied the post for the past 33 years. Mr Alcindor was elected into the post during the association’s annual general meeting held on Saturday at the Olympic House, Roche Caïman. Running uncontested, Alcindor received 22 out of the 23 votes to become Socga’s fourth president, replacing Antonio Gopal who had been in the post since 1992.
The two previous presidents were John Pillay (1979-1982) and John Mascarenhas (1982-1991). Former sprinter and Olympian Denis Rose is Socga’s new vice-president, replacing Michel Bau, while Fatime Kanté is the association’s new secretary general. The new leadership team takes over at a time when Seychelles athletes are preparing for several major regional and continental competitions, including the Indian Ocean Island Games scheduled for later in the year.
Mr Alcindor brings significant administrative experience to the role, having served in various capacities within the association and the wider sporting community. In his acceptance remarks, he thanked the membership for the confidence placed in him and pledged to continue the work of his predecessor in promoting Olympic values, supporting athlete welfare, and strengthening Seychelles’ presence in regional and international sporting bodies. He also paid tribute to Mr Gopal’s 33 years of service, describing him as a pillar of the Olympic movement in Seychelles.
