Ste Anne Marine National Park Marks 52 Years of Marine Conservation

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Ste Anne Marine Park, decreed on March 19, 1973, stands as a beacon of marine biodiversity and a testament to the nation’s commitment to preserving the natural environment. Commemorating the historic milestone, the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA) reflects on a journey filled with remarkable achievements in conservation. The park was one of the first marine protected areas established in the Indian Ocean and the first in Seychelles, setting a precedent for marine conservation efforts locally and regionally.

Significant strides have been made to restore and enhance coral reef ecosystems, which are crucial for marine life and coastal protection. Such projects not only enhance biodiversity but also improve resilience against climate change. Regular assessments have been implemented over the years to monitor the health of the park, leading to informed decision-making and adaptive management strategies. Effective enforcement strategies have been paramount in maintaining the integrity of Ste Anne Marine Park, with the SPGA rangers working to ensure compliance with park regulations and to prevent illegal activities within the park.

The authority has adopted advanced surveillance technologies such as drones and increased patrols with the objective to enhance compliance and security. The park creates economic opportunities, allowing businesses to engage in tourism-related activities and enhancing their livelihoods. ‘In 2024, we welcomed over 28,000 paying tourists to the park, reinforcing that such experiences are what visitors are longing for when in Seychelles,’ stated SPGA chief executive Allen Cedras. From its establishment, the park has attracted thousands of visitors each year, providing a vital source of income for local businesses and contributing towards the national economy.
