VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Association for the Promotion of Friendship between Seychelles and China signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday evening at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort, in recognition of China’s vital contribution to Seychelles in the early years. The agreement was signed and exchanged between the vice-president of the Chinese association, Yuan Mindao, and chairman of the Seychelles association, Vincent Meriton.
Mr Meriton noted that the newly signed memorandum is designed to strengthen cooperation in various sectors. Plans include joint cultural initiatives such as art exhibitions, festivals and traditional celebrations to foster deeper mutual understanding, collaboration in environmental protection and climate change solutions, as well as educational programmes, training initiatives and academic seminars to equip Seychellois citizens with skills to navigate an evolving global landscape. The relationship between the two countries dates back to 1976.
A delegation comprising representatives from four local provinces and cities in China also met with Vice-President Ahmed Afif at State House yesterday morning. Ambassador Lin Nan spoke of notable achievements since last year, including the first chartered flight between Chengdu and Seychelles, the Chinese Film Festival, and the participation of Chinese individuals in the Seychelles Fashion Week. To mark the occasion, Vice-President Afif was presented with a token by Yuan Mindao, symbolising the ongoing friendship between the two nations.
