VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Office of the Mayor of Victoria is spearheading a clean-up campaign this coming weekend in the country’s capital, focusing mainly on the Market Street area. Speaking to local media yesterday afternoon, acting Mayor Lydia Charlie said the two-day event on March 15 and 16 is to ensure the well-frequented place remains a conducive environment for shoppers and business owners. ‘As many of you may have noticed, there are ongoing activities in Victoria that generate waste, which in return attract rodents. These are not in line with what we would like to see,’ said Mrs Charlie.
To address this, the Mayor’s Office is requesting that shop owners located on Market Street, Benezet Street, Felix Paul Street and nearby areas power-wash the pavements in front of their buildings and get rid of any garbage on site by placing them in the two skips that will be provided by cleaning company Wastea. Mrs Charlie said there will also be a thorough clean-up at the Selwyn-Selwyn Clarke Market, starting immediately after the market closes on Saturday. The Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency will assist with the use of high-pressure water.
The Landscape and Waste Management Agency, along with other contractors, are expected to be present. The public health department will visit the area to identify where rat poison will be placed, primarily outside the market. Mrs Charlie emphasised that Victoria, being the smallest capital in the world, should be a clean and accessible place for everyone, including people with disabilities. The Market Street car park will remain closed from 2pm on Saturday to 10pm on Sunday for the clean-up, with the Victoria market reopening on Monday as usual.
