VICTORIA, Seychelles — A recent act of vandalism targeting the ‘I Love Seychelles’ banner in the heart of Victoria has sparked public concerns regarding the attitude of some citizens towards the nation’s cherished beautification efforts. The incident, which involved the destruction of two letters — specifically the ‘S’ — was observed over the weekend.
The cherished banner has become a standout feature for both visitors and residents alike, contributing to the celebration of the country’s vibrant spirit and affection. Acting Mayor of Victoria, Lydia Charlie, said it is truly disheartening to witness someone willing to ruin properties that are meant to celebrate the nation’s affection for its islands. She explained that the banner had previously sustained similar damages, precisely in December last year, and underwent repair work due to damage to the letter ‘H’.
Ms Charlie said they initially dismissed the first incident, but experiencing this again is completely unacceptable. She explained that repairing the damage will be more challenging, as the materials for the banner were imported, necessitating the engagement of qualified professionals for the repairs. ‘This represents an avoidable expense that will now detract from our budget, which could have been allocated to more beneficial purposes, making the situation even more disheartening.’ She added that the authorities have been notified, and an investigation is currently in progress.
