VICTORIA, Seychelles — The employment department hosted its annual job recruitment fair yesterday at the International Conference Centre, providing job options through the ‘My First Job’ programme for students who have just finished their studies at professional centres.
Minister for Employment and Social Affairs Patricia Francourt, who was present at the event, said the employment department stepped in to display vacancies for those students. ‘We have just under 50 establishments who showed up to present their available vacancies and we know that today we have about 400 jobs on display. This gives the youths the opportunity to see what are being offered on the labour market,’ she said, adding that the turnout was very good. She explained that youth unemployment stands at about 11%, and that events like this give young people the opportunity to think further ahead.
The minister also encouraged establishments to provide opportunities, training and experience. The personnel officer at the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) said her organisation always takes part in such fairs as there are many vacant positions, particularly technical ones such as technicians in survey and planning. Meanwhile, at the Post Office, the University of Seychelles (UniSey) held a road show to commemorate its 15th anniversary. Director of marketing, communications and stakeholder engagement at UniSey, Dolivette Changko, said the event was part of 15th-anniversary activities to promote courses and services offered, and to encourage students to apply.
