VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Kreol Academy has been holding a series of activities across the country to mark International Mother Language Day, with the goal of educating young people on the importance of their mother tongue. Speaking at one of the events, the academy’s representative, Mrs Fanchette, said the body was committed to raising awareness of the value of the Seychellois Creole language.
‘At the Kreol Academy, our aim is to educate young people on the importance of their mother tongue. We also show them that our mother tongue is the first language we come into contact with, the language we think in, the language we argue in, the language we dream in,’ she said. Mrs Fanchette noted that, like English and French, Creole is also important because it is a language of learning. The academy has, this year, introduced various new activities, such as word spelling, word formation and coded messages.
This year, the academy noted, a large number of schools took part in the activities, including schools on La Digue and Praslin, and a special programme is being planned for schools on Praslin. The academy has also been organising activities for secondary-school students to demonstrate Creole culture. Representatives said they were satisfied with the level of participation and the response from students and teachers across the islands. Activities for the promotion of the mother tongue continue at the administration bureau in Roche Caïman and at other public locations across Mahé.
