VICTORIA, Seychelles — Young swimmer Aaliyah Palestrini has been crowned Sportswoman of the Year 2024, displacing fellow swimmer Felicity Passon at the Sports Awards ceremony at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort and Casino on Saturday night. The award was presented by President Wavel Ramkalawan alongside the men’s award to bodybuilder Wallace Dorasamy.
Ms Palestrini’s victory comes after a season of strong performances in regional age-group competition, and signals the emergence of a new generation of Seychellois swimming talent. The other youth award winners were weightlifter Sharyna Anthony (best young female athlete) and World Junior U-16 kata champion Samuel Fanny of Kyokushin Ryu Karate (best young male athlete). The Sports Minister, Marie-Celine Zialor, congratulated the winners and said the awards recognise their dedication to their disciplines and to sport in general.
The ceremony was graced by President Ramkalawan, the First Lady, Vice-President Ahmed Afif, the Sports Minister, cabinet ministers, senior government officials, parents, family members and sponsors. The minister said the success of young athletes should be an inspiration to children in the country. Sport, she added, has the power to spread positivity and to take over space where negative activities might otherwise prevail.
