VICTORIA, Seychelles — Six private sector custodians of wetlands on Mahé have pledged their commitment to preserve and support the management of this important ecosystem, for the people of Seychelles. A signing ceremony was organised yesterday by the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment in collaboration with Nature Seychelles to formalise the pledge.
The six establishments which signed the pledge are Absa Bank, Avani Barbarons, Canopy by Hilton, Cheval Blanc, Constance Ephelia and Kempinski Seychelles Resort. Also present at the ceremony, which took place at the Kempinski Resort at Baie Lazare, were French ambassador to Seychelles, Olivia Berkeley-Christmann; Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, Flavien Joubert; and chief executive of Nature Seychelles, Dr Nirmal Jivan Shah.
The pledge is part of a national initiative aimed at strengthening partnerships among diverse parties for sustainable wetland management on Mahé. As part of this initiative, Nature Seychelles and the ministry have been working closely with the private sector, particularly large hotels with significant wetlands within or near their properties. The ceremony marks the signing of the first “Wetlands of Hope Pledge” with six private businesses committed to protecting, conserving and managing wetlands within their premises or elsewhere in the country.
