Health Care Agency Clears Cataract Waiting List in Landmark Achievement

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Health Care Agency (HCA) has cleared the waiting list for untreated cataract, a landmark achievement in the country’s healthcare system, the chief executive of the HCA, Dr Danny Louange, announced at a press conference at the Red Roof Building, Seychelles Hospital, yesterday afternoon.

Cataract is a condition that causes the lens of the eye to become cloudy. Dr Louange expressed his pride and relief at the successful completion of the initiative at the end of 2024. “For years, the extensive waiting list for untreated cataracts presented a significant challenge to comprehensive eye care delivery,” he stated, adding that the agency had been able to call in visiting specialists to clear the backlog within a matter of months.

Dr Louange thanked the team at the eye unit and the visiting specialists, including Dr Christian Prünte, Professor Cyrus Tabatabay and Dr Roland Barbé, for their work on the project. The HCA said patients with newly diagnosed cataract will now be treated within a maximum of three months of diagnosis.
