VICTORIA, Seychelles — Pelican lights have been installed at a number of pedestrian crossings in Seychelles to enhance road safety and improve night-time visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.
The new lighting is part of a wider programme of road safety measures being rolled out by the Ministry of Transport, in partnership with the Seychelles Land Transport Authority. The pelican lights are designed to alert approaching motorists to the presence of pedestrians at crossings, particularly during hours of low visibility. Officials said the installations had been placed at crossings with the highest recorded pedestrian traffic, including those near schools, hospitals and busy commercial areas.
The Ministry said the next phase of the programme will see additional crossings upgraded and a public awareness campaign encouraging pedestrians to use the marked crossings and drivers to slow down in their vicinity. Drivers who fail to stop at marked pedestrian crossings face fixed penalties under the Road Transport Act.
