University of Seychelles Hosts Symposium on Endemic Amphibians and Reptiles

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The University of Seychelles, in collaboration with the Island Biodiversity and Conservation Centre, hosted a one-day symposium at UniSey’s Anse Royale campus yesterday to showcase ongoing efforts to monitor and protect Seychelles’ endemic amphibians and reptiles.

The event brought together experts and conservation practitioners to discuss the current state of the islands’ endemic herpetofauna, a group that includes some of the rarest species in the Indian Ocean. Presentations covered population monitoring, threats from invasive species, and the role of habitat restoration in stabilising fragile populations.

Organisers said the symposium was an important step in coordinating research between the university, government agencies and international conservation partners. A full set of recommendations from the symposium is expected to be published in the coming weeks and shared with the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment for consideration in future biodiversity policy.
